Welcome to the website of the European Commission Delegation to Bangladesh.

What is the European Union? What is the European Commission doing in Bangladesh, and how does the European Community and Bangladesh cooperate? Certainly, these are some of the questions that you may be tempted to ask. Through this website we hope to give the answer to this and much more.

The European Commission Delegation to Dhaka, one of over 130 EC Delegations around the globe, opened in 1982 with the objective of fostering closer ties between the European Community and Bangladesh in the fields of development and economic co-operation. Today, the European Community annually provides aid to Bangladesh to the tune of 130 million euro (some 6.5 billion Taka). At the same time, the European Union and its Member States have become the biggest market for Bangladesh world exports. The trade balance has been positive for Bangladesh for many years now, finding its level at around 900 million euro (around 45 billion Taka) annually. Early in the year 2000, the European Community and Bangladesh signed a new Co-operation Agreement, which will enhance, deepen and strengthen co-operation in a true spirit of partnership.

This website will particularly serve those in Bangladesh, who want to know more and better about the European Union, its institutions and policies. The website will provide basic information and a variety of links to other EU websites offering specific and detailed information for the interested. Care has been taken by this website not to duplicate information on the European Union, which is already available in great detail in other EU websites. This website may thus be used as a starting point for anyone interested in information on EU Bangladesh relations. But if you have ideas about improving this website, or if you encounter any technical difficulties in using it, please let us know. All of the staff in the European Commission Delegation to Dhaka is keen to hear from you.

Stefan Frowein
Ambassador
Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Bangladesh
