Information Session on EC Asia-Invest Programme

The Delegation of the European Commission to Bangladesh held a half-day Information Session on Monday, 21 April 2003 in the BRAC Conference Room, BRAC Centre, Mohakhali, Dhaka. The purpose of the Information Session was to introduce the new phase of the Asian Invest Programme (2003 - 2007). As the 2003 call for proposal has just been announced, the session provided to Bangladeshi stakeholders details on how to apply for co-financing under the various instruments, provide indications of possible projects and highlight best practice for potential applicants. Opportunities for questions and discussion will be provided during the session.

The Asia-Invest Programme is an initiative of the European Union that aims to promote EU-Asia business Cooperation. The Programme provides assistance to non-profit intermediary organisations to facilitate partnerships between companies in the EU and Asia, and to strengthen the business environment to increase trade and investment between the two regions. A total budget of 41 million euro (equivalent Taka 254 crore) has been committed to the Programme over a five-year period, from 2003- 2007. The new phase of the programme has a special focus for LDC as the co-financing provision is up to 95% of the selected projects. There are therefore expectations that Bangladesh will avail more of the programme.

Mr. Yussuf Abdullah Harun, President, Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry was the Chief Guest in the session. The Asia-Invest II Programme was presented by Mrs. Anne Marchal, Second Secretary of the Delegation of the European Commission and she also explained in further details during the question-answer session.

The Information Session was participated by representatives from the chambers, business associations, Government bodies and think tanks dealing with private sector issues. The Information Session was also attended by the representatives from the EU Member State missions.
