EC Ambassador Pays Courtesy Call on FBCCI President Press Release Dhaka, 9 October 2003 Dhaka: H.E. Mr. Esko Kentrschynskyj, Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Bangladesh made a courtesy call on the newly elected President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), Mr. Abdul Awal Mintoo at the FBCCI Bhaban on October 9, 2003. The purpose of the visit was to congratulate the newly elected President and to discuss with him matters of mutual interests. It may be mentioned here that EU is the largest export market for Bangladesh for Ready Made Garments, Frozen Food and Leather Products representing the essential part of the export products. Mrs. Anne Marchal, Second Secretary and Head of Political, Economic, Trade, Press and Information section and Ms. Anjum Aziz, Media and Communication Officer of the Delegation were also present at the meeting. The Ambassador updated the President of FBCCI of the EU activities in the field of Trade Related Technical Assistance and Economic Cooperation. On going activities include capacity building for the Ministry of Commerce (support to WTO cell) and the Chambers. Besides, the Ambassador also appraised the President of a large Trade Support Program, about to be finalized in Brussels, which provides amongst other activities, for support to the Bangladesh Foreign Trade Institute, a public-private partnership initiative to strengthened Bangladesh trade capacity. The Ambassador also informed that a Small Project Facility in the field of economic cooperation has been approved in Brussels last September. Calls for proposals will be organized in 2004 in which FBCCI is invited to participate. The EU is also the largest donor of South Asia Enterprise Development Facility, which is providing valuable assistance in the field of Business Development and access to finance to SMEs in Bangladesh since 2002. -More follows- Recalling successful events organized with FBCCI to promote Asia Invest Program, the Ambassador also invited FBCCI to avail more of it as well as other initiative such as Asia IT & C.
