Description

Overall objective(s)

To empower the rural poor to claim their rights by way of critical engagement with local government, through representative, effective and well-governed community based organisations.

The specific objectives of the project are:

Expansion of the constituency and increased intensity of collective power of the poor by strengthening old Federations and the formation of new Federations (in new Districts), alongside regional and national promotion of community-based organisations.

Increase in Union Federations adopting and complying with an agreed constitution and democratic practices while establishing and promoting diversity and gender equality.

Improved organisational accountability and transparency, through capacity building of leaders.

Enhanced activism and engagement with duty bearers on various social and related vulnerability issues especially women's rights, among Federation membership and the wider rural community.

Description

Description

The overarching goal of the Programme for the Promotion of Development and Confidence Building in CHT is socio-economic development of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) based on the principles of self-reliance, decentralisation and sustained peace. The programme activities cover all three districts of CHT region namely Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachari in the south-eastern part of Bangladesh which is a distinct socio geographical area within Bangladesh that suffered prolonged armed conflict until the 1997 Peace Accord. The programme addresses four broad Areas: 1) Building the Capacity of key CHT institutions by improving human resource management and technical and logistical capacity so that these  institutions can effectively carry out their developmental mandates/roles, and support grassroots and community development work; 2) Empowerment of grassroots Communities of people by supporting and enabling   them to develop and manage small scale project activities (energy, agro-forestry, livestock etc.) – facilitated by local NGOs and with strong involvement of local government institutions. 3) Region-wide Initiatives for increased economic opportunities and social development including basic education, rural employment creation, development of marketing opportunities and infrastructure, eco-tourism, private sector development ;  4) Measures for building confidence  security,   sustained peace and harmony in the region.

Description

The project aims to help poor indigenous populations of 61 villages in 4 Upazilla of Bandarban in Chittagong Hill Tracts region to settle there in a permanent manner, and to be progressively integrated into the local community, though respecting their own identity. Agricultural, legal and social activities are being developed in such a way that the targeted families are actively involved, with the support of Caritas Bangladesh’s agents and the agreement of the local authorities.

Description

The project will tackle the extreme poverty and indecent living conditions of outcaste and minority groups, that are directly linked to their social status, through a process of empowerment, advocacy and increased access to quality, appropriate services (education, health and sanitation, skills training and connection to the market).

In order to make the voices of women, minorities and lower castes heard, the project incorporates advocacy campaigns that are organised by the beneficiaries with support from national and regional organisations.

Description

TThe overall objective of the action is to contribute to good governance and poverty reduction by improving local public access to pro-poor services. The specific project purpose is to enhance the capacity of Union Parishads (UP) to deliver pro-poor infrastructure and services in an effective, efficient, equitable and accountable manner.

Within the wider LGSP, the World Bank has committed a Specific Investment Loan of US$ 111.5 million to underpin the nation-wide rollout of the UP block grant. Building on an earlier UNDP/UNCDF-funded pilot project in Sirajganj (SLGDP), the LIC develops innovative approaches in 6 pilot districts, such as participatory planning, budgeting and performance assessments, which will result in additional top-up block grants for the best-performing UPs. The partners within LIC are UNDP (consortium leader), UNCDF and Danida.

Description

The overall programme objective is to improve access to justice and human rights in Bangladesh particularly among disadvantaged and marginalised groups, and thus contribute to good governance, and poverty alleviation.

The project purpose is to empower and enable the poor, women and vulnerable groups to access a fair and effective justice system at the local level by activating 500 village courts so that disputes may be resolved in an expeditious, transparent and affordable manner. The EC expects strong synergies with the LGSP-LIC
